An impressive late season win streak
October 13, 2021
The Cowboys have a current record of 9-9 this season and have been performing well. The beginning of the season started on a high note with the team winning 4 of their first 6 games. They won both home and away by big margins. This gave the Cowboys confidence going into their next few games. They used this confidence to win the next game against Harrison.
Despite the great start, the middle of the season was rough for Gunnison. They played higher ranked teams that posed quite the challenge. The team lost five in a row, losing the majority of games by 3 or less. Two games against James Irwin and Delta were extremely close and came down to the wire resulting in the Cowboys losing by only one. These losses were tough, but something that the team could, and would, surmount.
The following three games for the Cowboys resulted in three dubs. The team played Aspen for the first time this season and blew them out of the water with a score of 24-3. This game hyped them up and made the next game a breeze.
Gunnison played Aspen again two hours later and made a fool of them once again. They beat the Skiers 21-1 and only played 2 innings due to the mercy rule taking effect after the Cowboys scored 13 runs in one inning. This game gave Gunnison an edge going into their next game against Cedaredge the next week.
The double header kicked off with the early game at 2 pm. The game started slow with only 5 runs scored by the 5th inning. Cedaredge was leading 4-1 at the start of the 6th, but that all changed as senior Melita Ferchau led the Cowboys to a 5 run inning to give them a 2 run lead over the Bruins.
The game was close till the end, the game was tied 7-7 at the end of the 7th. The game needed extra innings. The Cowboys ended up finishing strong with 2 runs in the final inning to Cedaredge’s 1.
The Cowboys are on a roll going into the later rematch against Cedaredge, and want to keep it going. The game was ramping up to be a good one with the tense energy of the last game still in the air. Cedaredge started off strong, a 6-2 lead going into the 5th inning.
However, a storm was coming and the weather became nasty. Cedaredge took advantage of this weather and started off with a 5-2 lead going into the 5th. The weather continued to worsen, but the Cowboys fought back. They scored 4 runs in the 5th, and 3 in the 6th to bring them within one of the lead.
Nevertheless, the weather became too much and the game was not able to be completed. The Cowboys would have to come back to Cedaredge at a later date to finish the last inning. This is a frustrating way to end a game, but hopefully the Cowboys will carry their momentum into the last inning.
No matter the outcome of this game, the team has been lead exceptionally by their seniors. They have given great motivation to their younger teammates and pushed them to succeed. The teams success is greatly influenced by the leaders on the team, and the seniors hope to pass on this leadership on to the grade.
