Gunnison High School offers many different amazing programs, and among them falls the ski program. Every tuesday the students go up to crested butte and get to free ski on their own, they are not required to stick together. All students are able to be involved in the ski program. Unlike some classes and programs at GHS it is not restricted to exclusively juniors and seniors, which is part of the reason that all of the students at GHS can enjoy. It is popular because there are no requirements to have before enrolling in the program. Students are expected to make up the school work that they miss on their own time, so there are a few drawbacks to the program, but all in all the students love it.
The students go up to CBMR, as Paden Davis says “I have enjoyed being able to spend more time skiing this year and working on my flips.” The students take the RTA buses up to the mountain, but Mr. Gibney who is currently running the program says that they are actively seeking to get school transportation instead.
One of the students, Burke O’rouke says “I love being able to take a break from school once a week and be outside while I’m doing it”. These are just some of the amazing things about the ski program at Gunnison High School.
The program has been a part of Gunnison High School for quite some time but it has gained traction in recent years. The ski program was started in multiple years ago by Leo Maloy who has since passed the program on to Pathways counselor Austin Gibney. The ski program was started in 2022 by Leo Maloy who has since passed the program on to Pathways counselor Austin Gibney who is still running it. When Mr. Gibney took over, that is when the program started to really gain traction with the students.
