Whether you’re out in the backcountry skiing or snowmobiling, it is always important to be educated on avalanche safety. The first step is to educate yourself. Learn about avalanche terrain, weather conditions, and snowpack stability. You can sign up for AIARE avalanche courses through the Irwin guides website and take your class up in Crested Butte!
Before going out skiing or snowmobiling, you should always check the avalanche forecast. A great website to use is the Colorado Avalanche Information Center which gives you various information about how the snowpack has been set up and whether avalanche danger is low, moderate, considerable, high, or extreme. It also gives you advice on what slopes are most prone to avalanche.
Another great way to stay safe is to travel with a friend. Never venture into avalanche terrain alone, Always travel with a partner and keep each other in sight. It is also always a great idea to carry safety gear. This includes a transceiver, shovel, probe, and it’s also good to have an avalanche airbag pack. Make sure you know how to use them effectively before going into avalanche zones.
It is also always imperative to always be prepared for emergencies. Have a plan in case of an avalanche. Get your group of buddies you go out with and practice using your beacons to find each other. When you get caught in an avalanche you want everyone to know how to use their tools correctly and quickly to find you or others safely.
