With the regular fall sports season coming to an end, and the postseason being around the corner, several sports have high expectations of competing at the regional and state level for Gunnison High School athletes. Softball and mountain biking’s regular season ended on October 7th. Cross country’s regular season ended on October 13th.
Cross Country had their regionals October, 20th in Colorado Springs and had several state qualifiers. The girls team qualified as a team by taking 3rd place and had 3 placers. A 10th place finish for Catalina Schwab, a 6th place finish for Jemma Petrie, and a regional runner up, Madelyn Stice. The boys had two individual qualifiers being Spencer Hayes and Rowen Downum. Spencer got 11th place and Rowen got 15th place in their regional race. They will all compete in the state race in Colorado Springs on October 28.
The Gunnison mountain biking team had all four of their regional races throughout October. These regional races helped rank athletes for the state race in their respective categories. State was the 21st and the 22nd of October. They had 17 state qualified and 14 attend. The team had several state placers highlighted with Ava Baer taking 9th in the sophomore girls division and Owen Frazier taking 3rd in the freshman boys division. The team took 6th overall in division 2.
For softball they had their regional game against Lamar on October 14th but they did not qualify for state.
When asked about how the softball season went Romie Uhrig said “the team did really good, this was the strongest team Gunnison has had for a long time”. The team has been more successful than past teams recently and expect to get better throughout the years.
Over 200 students participated in fall sports this year. as the fall season wraps up, the Gunnison community look forward to what winter athletics will bring.
