Swimming to championship
January 26, 2023
Making it to state championships for the last few years, it seems the Gunnison High school swim and dive team is heading in that direction once again this year. Just last week the team had multiple matches and qualified in the top five from eighteen different schools. They have had seven meets so far this season and placed really well overall. They have placed third in three of their meets and second in two of their meets. In their last home meet just last week the team placed first. There are 17 girls overall on the team. There are three divers and fourteen swimmers.
Coach Finney says that his goal for this season is to “get all of my divers qualified for state which they all already have but I’d like to see a top five finish at state.”
The team unfortunately only has one senior on the team, Mikayla O’Connell. Mikayla says it is “kinda hard being the only senior on the team” but luckily she has other upperclassmen to help her out such as Abby Cattles and Kailyn Japuntich.
The Cowboy divers have regionals next weekend, February 4-5 in Grand Junction at Mesa University.
