GHS Students are in a Giving Mood After Thanksgiving

On Monday November 28th the blood bus stopped at Gunnison High School for the day to give students above the age of 16 the opportunity to give blood to those in need. In total 20 people signed up, 17 people participated, 13 people had blood that was viable, and 39 lives were saved through this event. Students under the age of 18 needed to sign a physical or online permission form with the permission of a guardian. The bus was parked in the GHS pickup loop at the front of the school.

When students went to give blood, after the confirmation of permission from a guardian, students would receive a prick of the finger to see if their blood was viable. The blood bus workers would then take a pint of blood when the student was lying down in a comfortable environment. Afterwards students would lay down and have snacks like crackers and cookies which were supplied by GHS’s Student Leadership Council who worked together, budgeted and checked for allergies beforehand. Donors were also given lots of liquids to help recuperate after donating. Allie Schwartz, a member of SLC and a donater says “It felt good to know I was doing something that helps others”. In years past GHS has worked with blood donations, and GHS plans on having the blood bus come back next year for more students to donate to those in need.
