Journalism Class Partners with Gunnison Country Times
October 6, 2022
The Gunnison High School (GHS) journalism class is fortunate to begin a partnership with the Gunnison Country Times. The class will be responsible for a two-page spread in the Gunnison Country Times once a month, thanks to the generosity of Gunnison Country Times Publisher, Alan Wartes.
The class will continue to publish the online Giddy-up every two weeks, as has been done in the past, and will use articles from it to share with the Gunnison Country Times community. In addition to covering all of the news at GHS, the class will focus on the school news that is most relevant to the broader community in articles for the Gunnison Country Times.
“I am excited about this new partnership with the Times,” said journalism teacher Susan Powers. “Having the opportunity to be published in a print format as well as the digital format, will teach the students a level of professionalism in terms of their writing and meeting deadlines.”
Last school year was the first in many that GHS had a newspaper, and its return came by way of a digital copy. Newspapers serve to inform and to document daily life through the years, and GHS had a long standing print edition of newspapers dating back to the late 1920’s. “One of the things I find fascinating about looking at the older school newspapers is seeing what I had in common with the students from different time periods at GHS,” Allie Schwartz, editor of the Giddyup stated, “It was also interesting to see what the students were passionate about and thought needed changing within this school.”
Schwartz and the rest of the Giddyup staff are excited for this partnership with the Gunnison Country Times to share their writing with students and the remainder of the Gunnison community.
