Are You Committed? Because these Seniors sure are…
A portion of Gunnison High School (GHS) athletes are taking their high school athletic abilities to a collegiate level. Their dedication shown to athletics has paid off. All
of the athletes deserve a shout out and a moment in the spotlight for all their accomplishments.
Starting off with Samuel Buckhanan, who participated in football, hockey, and baseball throughout his high school career. Buckhanan
will be attending Minot StateUniversity located in Minot, North Dakota to play football. There he will study communications and hopefully be able to join the Minot Men’s Hockey team.
“The community, coaching staff, and players were all welcoming and made me feel right at home,” said Buckhanan.
Fellow senior Devin Gomez will wrestle for Western Colorado University this upcoming fall. Gomez will study kinesiology and is aiming to break personal records. Gomez had a phenomenal wrestling season and placed second at state in the 120 pound weight division.
He has high regards for the coaching staff and believes they can take him far within the world of wrestling.
“Ever since I stepped into that room I knew I was going to go there, and I’ve always envisioned my name on the wall of National Champions,” Gomez said.

Jackson Baker participated in cross country and track throughout high school. Baker will attend Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction and study computer
science. In high school Baker has run in four state cross country races and one state track meet. He is excited to develop as a college runner and be part of a rising team.
“I am very excited to learn under Shane Niksic, because he has coached so many talented runners,” said Baker.
As of publication time, the seniors listed above are all the future college athletes that could be scratched up by the Giddyup. If you have any additional information about seniors that need to be included in the shout-out, contact the author at [email protected].
